Abstract

Jason Mosser reviews five recent books on Hunter S. Thompson: Hunter S. Thompson: The Last Interview and Other Conversations, edited by David Streitfeld (Melville House); Who Killed Hunter S. Thompson?, edited by Warren Hinckle (Last Gasp); Kevin T. McEneaney’s Hunter S. Thompson: Fear, Loathing, and the Birth of Gonzo (Rowman and Littlefield); Timothy Denevi’s Freak Kingdom (Public Affairs); and Fear and Loathing Worldwide, edited by Robert Alexander and Christine Isager (Bloomsbury Academic). Mosser finds the title interview the least illuminating and Hinckle’s book self-promoting but richly illustrated; he values McEneaney’s close readings but faults his neglect of Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72, and he praises Denevi’s documentation and the essay collection’s international scope.
