Abstract

An interactive roundtable discussion, including audience participation, that focuses on the receptions and controversies surrounding An American Tragedy and The Executioner’s Song in which a number of comparisons are made in analyzing the respective writers and their concern with the topic of executed murderers.

  • Jerome Loving, Texas A&M University

    Jerome Loving is a biographer of Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, and Theodore Dreiser, is working on a book tentatively entitled “State-Raised Convict: Jack Henry Abbott and the Legacy of The Executioner’s Song.” He is Distinguished Professor of English at Texas A&M University.

  • J. Michael Lennon, Wilkes University

    J. Michael Lennon is Emeritus Professor of English at Wilkes University. In 2007 he co-authored with Mailer On God: An Uncommon Conversation, and in October 2013, his authorized biography, Norman Mailer: A Double Life, was published by Simon & Schuster. His edition of Mailer’s selected letters will be published by Random House in December 2014.
