About the Journal
The journal publishes original research on Mailer’s fiction, nonfiction, journalism, correspondence, and public career. This includes work on his activities as a political figure, filmmaker, essayist, critic, and public intellectual, as well as scholarship that situates Mailer within broader conversations in postwar American literature, literary journalism, film and media studies, politics, war writing, masculinity, and American cultural history. Contributions may employ a range of critical and methodological approaches and are expected to engage existing scholarship.
In addition to peer-reviewed research articles, The Mailer Review publishes shorter scholarly notes, review essays, book reviews, interviews, archival materials, bibliographic resources, creative work, and editorially curated primary texts, including previously unpublished or recovered writing by Norman Mailer. The journal also publishes remembrances and reprinted critical essays that document the intellectual history of Mailer studies.
The journal maintains a clear distinction among its various forms of contribution. Research articles are evaluated through a double-blind peer review process. Other sections are reviewed by the editors and, when appropriate, by external readers. This structure reflects the journal’s commitment to scholarly rigor while supporting a wide range of intellectual, archival, and creative work.
The Mailer Review may occasionally publish special issues, including themed collections, festschrifts, or issues edited by guest editors, when such projects align with the journal’s mission. All special issues are subject to the same editorial standards as regular issues.
Originally published in print, The Mailer Review now appears in a digital format in order to expand access, preserve its archive, and support new forms of scholarly communication. The journal remains committed to the standards of academic publishing while embracing the possibilities of digital dissemination.
