Abstract

“Sun” is regarded as one of D.H. Lawrence’s finest short stories, although critics have not sufficiently focused on its integrated structure, patterned repetition, and visionary implications. There is inadequate engagement with the story’s resonance within the arc of Lawrence’s turbulent life and artistic preoccupation that may bear upon his creation of this sensuous tale. There are standard perspectives on the story as well as elements of Lawrence’s fictional technique, including aspects of his craft that are further illuminated by relevant ideas about narration and sexuality in the work of Norman Mailer, Trigant Burrow, and Giovanni Verga. One of the finest pieces of psychobiography on Lawrence’s art and life is by Norman Mailer in The Prisoner of Sex.
