Raymond M. Vince reviews Peter Balbert’s D. H. Lawrence and the Marriage Matrix: Intertextual Adventures in Conflict, Renewal, and Transcendence (Cambridge Scholars), which reads eight of Lawrence’s late works, from The Lost Girl to Lady Chatterley’s Lover, through close reading and psychobiography. Vince notes the book’s interest for Mailer scholars, especially a chapter pairing Lady Chatterley’s Lover with The Deer Park, and praises its reproductions of Lawrence’s paintings, its index, and its bibliography. He questions Balbert’s claim that marriage is the thematic center of Lawrence’s writing, preferring an eclectic approach to a continuously changing author, but judges the book a meticulous and useful study.
