Abstract

Phillip Sipiora reviews Norman Mailer. JFK. Superman Comes to the Supermarket (Taschen), edited by Nina Weiner with an introduction by J. Michael Lennon, a lavish reissue of Mailer’s 1960 Esquire essay on the Democratic convention. Sipiora revisits the essay’s metaphors, its satire of delegates and the Biltmore, and its portrait of Kennedy as hero against the nation’s double life. He praises the volume’s hundreds of photographs by Cornell Capa, Garry Winogrand, and others and Lennon’s crisp introduction on Mailer’s fascination with Kennedy.
