Twenty Years of The Mailer Review, Now Online
The Mailer Review, the annual scholarly journal of the Norman Mailer Society, has published its entire back run online, free to read. Dr. Gerald R. Lucas, Professor of English at Middle Georgia State University, is the journal’s editor.
The first fifteen volumes, edited by the journal’s founding editor, Phillip Sipiora, and published from 2007 to 2021, hold 732 essays, interviews, reviews, poems, stories and bibliographies by nearly three hundred contributors. Among them are unpublished Norman Mailer stories transcribed from manuscripts at the Harry Ransom Center. Until this year, most of that work could be read only in print. Every article now has its own page at mailerreview.org, with an abstract, keywords and contributor information, so students and scholars can find, read and cite it.
MGA graduate student Josie Hadaway, Lucas’s editorial assistant in spring 2026, entered the first eight volumes article by article. “Josie’s careful work set the standard for everything that followed,” Lucas said. “A journal is only as useful as it is findable. Now anyone with a phone can read twenty years of Mailer scholarship.”
Lucas, who has worked on the journal since its first issue, succeeded Sipiora as editor in 2026. He also edits Project Mailer and the digital edition of Norman Mailer: Works and Days, and he co-edited Lipton’s: A Marijuana Journal, 1954–1955 (Arcade, 2024).
